Medical Treatment

Breast Imaging

  • Breast imaging is a fundamental component of breast cancer screening. In South Korea, it is conducted once every two years as part of the national cancer screening program. In simpler terms, it involves taking X-ray images of the breast.
  • During the procedure, the breast is gently compressed from the sides and top and bottom using specially designed plastic plates.
  • The more the breast is compressed, the flatter it becomes, resulting in reduced radiation exposure and improved visibility of the breast's interior, allowing for the detection of even small abnormalities, including early-stage cancer.

Breast Ultrasound

  • Breast ultrasound is a radiation-free examination, making it a safe option, especially for young women of childbearing age. It is a useful tool for detecting the presence of breast masses and distinguishing between cystic and solid masses based on their characteristics.
  • Additionally, in cases where breast tissue density is high, such as in many Korean women, breast ultrasound can be valuable in identifying masses that may be challenging to observe through conventional mammography.
  • The accuracy of the diagnosis in breast ultrasound can vary depending on the expertise of the operator and their specialized knowledge of breast tissue.

Breast Tissue Biopsy

  • Breast tissue biopsy is a method used to confirm conditions within the breast. It is significantly more accurate than ultrasound and mammography.
  • There are several types of tissue biopsies, including fine-needle aspiration biopsy, core needle biopsy (total tissue biopsy), excisional biopsy, MammoTom biopsy, and surgical tissue biopsy, among others. While there are additional methods available, the ones mentioned above are commonly used.

Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB)

  • Fine needle aspiration biopsy involves using a thin needle (20-25 gauge) to puncture the area of concern and obtain a small sample of cells. These cells are then examined under a microscope to determine the presence or absence of cancer.
  • However, it is less accurate than core needle biopsy (total tissue biopsy) and is typically used in limited cases, particularly for cystic lesions.

Core Needle Biopsy

  • Core needle biopsy involves partial local anesthesia of the skin followed by making a 3mm incision. A biopsy needle with a larger gauge (14-18) is then used to obtain tissue samples through the incision, typically obtaining 4-5 samples in total.
  • This method offers a high accuracy rate of around 97-98%. Prior to the procedure, the area where the samples will be collected is partially anesthetized.

Implant Screening

  • Implant Screening refers to the process of evaluating and examining breast implants, typically done to assess their condition, integrity, and any potential issues or complications. This screening may include medical imaging, such as mammograms or ultrasounds, as well as physical examinations by a healthcare professional.
  • It is commonly performed for individuals who have undergone breast augmentation surgery to ensure the implants remain in good condition and to detect any problems early, if they arise.

Client

"During a business trip to Seoul, I had a sudden severe pain on my right side. After a visit to the E.R, I was diagnosed with a thyroid issue, and the doctors mentioned that the soonest I could get a procedure was in a week! Thanks to Dr. Kim, I was able to undergo the procedure right away and attend a crucial conference. Being present at the conference was essential, as it would have potentially cost me a very important client if I had been absent."

Client

"The doctor and the nursing staff are incredibly kind. The doctor explained things in detail and answered questions in an easy-to-understand manner, which I really appreciated. The nursing staff also provided excellent guidance and took care of patients' comfort, so I received great medical care during my vacuum-assisted biopsy. I felt more at ease in the hospital despite being unwell."
